Dr. Schneiderman Awarded 2008 Longuet-Higgins PrizeDr. Henry Schneiderman, along with Dr. Takeo Kanade, received the Longuet-Higgins Prize for "fundamental contributions in computer vision that have withstood the test of time", namely their 1998 paper: H. Schneiderman, T. Kanade. "Probabilistic modeling of local appearance and spatial relationships for object recognition." The award was given at the 2008 IEEE Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) conference. |

PittPatt teams with GE for development of intelligent security camera systemPittsburgh Pattern Recognition is teaming with General Electric in the development of an intelligent security camera system. The system will obtain high resolution facial imagery using a motorized pan-tilt-zoom camera that will track and zoom in on faces that enter the field of view. This effort will be funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). |

Patent issued for object recognition technologyDr. Henry Schneiderman, President and CEO of Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition, was issued a patent for an "Object finder for two-dimensional images, and system for determining a set of sub-classifiers composing an object finder." This patent, under license from Carnegie Mellon University to Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition, provides critical intellectual property protection for a body of techniques comprising PittPatt's state-of-the-art object recognition technology. |

The Technology Collaborative funds commercialization of face-centric video compressionPittsburgh Pattern Recognition was selected for funding by The Technology Collaborative (TTC) to commercialize its technology for face-centric video compression. This technology enables video to be further compressed without compromising the quality of visible faces. Such technology is useful for applications that involve transmission of video, such as video teleconferencing and internet video downloading. It also is potentially useful for efficiently storing archival video such as that recorded by security cameras. Matching funds for this effort will be supplied by Cisco. |

PittPatt selected as contractor for VACE program, Phase IIIPittsburgh Pattern Recognition has been selected as a contractor by the U.S. Disruptive Technologies Office for Phase III of the Video Analysis and Content Extraction (VACE) program. The goal of the program is to automate analysis of video. PittPatt's effort will focus on object recognition and tracking in video, particularly robust recognition of faces in low resolution, low quality video. Pittsburgh Pattern Recognition will receive over $2.1 million (USD) to support this effort which will continue through September, 2009. |
